An open letter to Anthony Watts

Dear Anthony, In your post today, you make a very valid point about the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature (BEST) team publicising their findings before completing their normal PR process (and you may be right that their haste is due to the impending COP17 in Durban). However, I would have thought that you do not need me to tell you that your position on this is deeply hypocritical for at least two reasons: 1. Most of the stuff that supposedly “sceptical” people rely on – and perpetually re-circulate on the Internet – is not subject to any PR process; and has never been published in a reputable journal. 2. The criminal act that led to the leaking of cherry-picked (and wilfully-misrepresented) CRU/UEA emails was very clearly aimed at preventing progress being made at COP15 in Copenhagen two years ago. Therefore, I think the most likely explanation for BEST not following normal procedure on this occasion is that the residual uncertainly they have in the validity of their conclusions is now so vanishingly small that they have taken this risk.

See link to Climate Crock of the Week opposite

Furthermore, despite the best efforts of the Atlas Network and Conservative Think Tanks around the world, I would venture to suggest that BEST may have also done this to try and hasten the final nails being driven into the coffin of those that seek to perpetuate a completely artificial and unnecessary debate (and thereby the continuance of “business as usual” by the 1% for whom Occupy Wall Street-ers have so much contempt). Kind regards, Anthropocene Reality. ——————— Update: (21 Oct 2011 1603 GMT) In my haste to publish the above, I overlooked the strangest aspect to this story, the fact that Dr. Richard A Muller has been in charge of BEST: Dr Muller has previously been a vociferous and repetitive advocate of fallacious claims that the MBH98 Hockey Stick graph was a fabrication so, it could be argued that, he should be forgiven for not now conceding that global warming is happening and that we are causing it… “It could be argued“, perhaps, but it should not be necessary to do so: How much evidence does he want or need? If we are not causing it, what is? Surely he does not still think it is the Sun? Unfortunately, Muller’s apparent record of ideologically-induced selective-blindness makes this entirely possible… I am so bemused by all of this that I have emailed Dr Muller’s wife (and fellow BEST Director) to see if she can help me understand what Muller believes is driving global warming (if it is not CO2). If I get a clear response, I will be sure to post it here…

About Rick Altman

Possibly just another 'Climate Cassandra' crying 'Wolf' in cyberspace. However, the moral of the old children's story is that the Wolf eventually turned up!

A great report and a timely one, I only have one objection in that they say Global Cities only take up 1% of the land mass and therefore provide minimal effect on Global Warming. This is totally wrong as obviously they did no formula work on the power transfer between cities and their power plants and also because the extra 5 Billion people this century have taken up a tremendous amount of land space … certainly more than 1%, too me it looks more like in the last century, a 30% growth has occurred in land development for urban use. More than likely also, what they see as Urban areas and what engineers call “urban landscapes” are two totally different things, but I’m sure more work will come in this area soon enough. Regardless… they took the time to collect all of the evidence and not just bit and pieces, a great piece of work with more than obvious conclusions. Now if we can only get them to stop talking so much about CO2 and other such side issues and concentrate solely of the Warming Environment then there might just be a chance that people will get the message in time.

The heat in each layer is transferring from the hot areas to the cooler areas OF EACH LAYER… ie. the heat is transferring up from the bottom layer and heading up ……… and heading down from the top layers. Both things are happening at once. It is a natural progression of the Earth’s evolution in which CO2 plays only a small but important part ….. but it is not the real or only reason … Our own heat production is causing the transfer to increase in speed but it is something that due to the laws of physics would happen anyway. Who on Earth would expect two different areas of the atmosphere, at different temperatures, NOT TO EQUALIZE BY HEAT TRANSFER? It is an obvious conclusion that doesn’t even need any Global research, it happens in all planets with an atmosphere. As well Heat from the bottom layer (ours) is not only transferring to the cooler areas above, it is conveniently being absorbed by the oceans, which have already been doing this since time immemorial, they have to reach a saturation point sooner or later. Where are our planetary geologists when we need them most? 😦 You need to forget CO2 … it made for a great start but even if it were the culprit, the main thing now is to prove to the world that HEAT exists and that we must do something about reducing the amounts we produce “at ground levels” Doing this will automatically fix any CO2 problems anyway, should they exist 🙂 Also; there is nothing we can do about the top layers of the atmosphere, the heat will reach us one day, where we like it or not. This part is unstoppable. Time to evolve and adapt or build spaceships 😦

Lucky for us the proof of Global Warming, in conjunction with this latest research, sits in the NASA vaults 🙂 Back in the 60s we measured the temperature in all the layers of our atmosphere, we did this over and over again for many years … why? For the space program….., we needed to know the temperatures in order to make re-entry shields. The data still sits with NASA All science has to do is to re-measure all the layers (very cheap) and then compared them with the data held by NASA This would provide us will an accurate and undeniable proof of Global Warming one way or the other, if science started now we could have all our answers within a year, maybe even less. And the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature (BEST) team appears to be already fully set up for exactly this kind of research; perhaps they should receive more funding for it … they earnt it 🙂

Yet another well-reasoned logical argument from a so-called “sceptic“.

Yes, I’m very skeptical about what Donald is writing. Seriously: “Also; there is nothing we can do about the top layers of the atmosphere, the heat will reach us one day, where we like it or not. This part is unstoppable.” What? The heat will reach us one day? What heat? Maybe if we all put on our tin foil hats, that will reflect all this ‘heat’ back into space.

Matt, Thanks for not taking offence ( or even an entire garden centre 🙂 ) at my reply. I suspected (but dared not to hope) that you we’re directing your remark at Donald (not me), as indeed you have now confirmed to be the case. As I have told Donald himself, on his own blog, I think his ideas are a red-herring (and, for that reason, I wish he would stop repeating them at length here). I have also queried why it is the Ionosphere that is so hot (>2000 Celsius) while both Space and the Lower atmosphere are much colder. As I have also said to him, if he is right and every other atmospehric physicist in the world is barking up the wrong tree, he deserves a Nobel Prize. I have also quieried why he has not got his ideas published in a peer-reviewed Journal (if Anthony Watts can do it anybody should be able to do it; no matter how crazy they are). Rather worryingly, Donald’s answer to this question (and to a number of others) has come very close to sounding like paranoia and/or conspiracy theory…

Rick – I have not published because in retiring I gave up science back in 1998, I have no wish to get back into the “back and forward” arguments between science and engineering. Today I merely blog and comment in an honest fashion (right or wrong) and allow others to do the same. Personally, I feel that you have a great message to put forward but I tell you once again, the only way for it to get across is for you to become a DotCom ($30) and thus Google will do the rest for you…. same as newspapers and magazines and so on.

Also I notice the “eminent” Matt above posts not one iota of anything except to complain about the works of others. Rick and myself however have no problems in throwing ourselves into any discussion and talking about our own ideas. That is what science is all about … challenging all things until the truth is found/ Matt might do real well to learn these things.

Thanks once again for the vote of confidence, Donald. I am not aware of your previously recommending that I register my own domain name (which I have done before on another subject) but, why would this alone garner more publicity and/or traffic?
